Dance is a powerful and expressive subject which encourages students to develop their creative, physical, emotional and intellectual capacity, whatever their previous experience in the subject.

Consistent with the educational philosophy of the IB, the Diploma Programme Dance curriculum aims for a holistic approach to dance, and embraces a variety of dance traditions and dance cultures—past, present and looking towards the future. Performance, creative and analytical skills are mutually developed and students are exposed to a range of dance styles to develop their cultural, contextual and technical knowledge and understanding

In this course, students will study three areas of dance; Performance, Composition and Analysis, and World Dance Studies. Students will develop a high level of proficiency in technical and performance skills. They will also work through various creative processes in choreographing their own dances. World dance studies will require students to experience and explore dance from more than one culture. Some work outside class time will be required for rehearsals and research.  

• Performance (Internal Assessment): A combination of solo/duet/group performances in any style, show proficiency and expressive ability appropriate to the dance. A short written note outlining performed by the student to the dancer’s interpretation of the piece to accompany each performance.

• Composition and Analysis (External Assessment): A presentation of dance works choreographed by the student; one of the pieces must be performed by other dancers. Accompanied by a written analytical statement documenting and reflecting upon the processes of composition and analysis of one of the dances.

• World Dance Studies (External Assessment): A formal written report, analysing the similarities and differences between two dance styles drawn from different dance cultures and/or traditions, one of which is familiar to the student and one unfamiliar.
