The BTEC International Level 3 Sport course is a high-quality qualification designed to enhance your skills, knowledge, and career prospects. It is equivalent in size to one International A-Level. This comprehensive curriculum provides a broad understanding of the global sports sector, which is a significant economic powerhouse encompassing various sectors, from media and marketing to merchandise, apparel sales, and athletic organisations. The course prepares students for direct entry into the global sports industry or for progression to higher education. It also combines well with other BTEC qualifications such as Business, Digital Design, and Multimedia Production.
The course consists of 6 units completed over 2 years. The following units will be studied:
Health, Wellbeing and Sport (Compulsory Unit): This foundational unit provides a comprehensive understanding of the physiological, psychological, and sociological factors that influence health and well-being in a sporting context.
Nutrition for Physical Performance: This unit focuses on the critical role of sports nutrition in optimising athletic performance. Students will analyse how
Macro and micronutrient intake, as well as hydration status, impact the body. Students will learn to create effective nutrition protocols for athletes.
Sports Psychology: In this unit, students will delve into the psychological aspects of sport. They will explore the cognitive and emotional skills that underpin performance, such as motivation, anxiety, and attentional focus, and learn how these factors can be manipulated to enhance athletic success.
Fitness Testing: This unit covers the principles of physiological assessment. Students will learn to conduct various fitness assessments, analyse the resulting data, and apply these findings to create personalised, evidence-based training programs for athletes.
Organising Sports Events: This practical unit teaches students about the strategic logistics and project management involved in organising and executing successful sports events. This includes everything from budgetary planning and marketing strategies to risk management and event day operations.
Rules, Regulations and Officiating: This unit provides a deep exploration of the frameworks that structure modern sports. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of how regulations and officiating protocols uphold the principles of fair play and integrity across various sporting disciplines
Assessment is based on a unit-by-unit grading system. All units are internally assessed, meaning the assignments are set and marked by the teachers at West Island School, and then are subject to external verification by Pearson. To receive the qualification, you must complete all units and achieve a Pass or higher.
Within this BTEC curriculum, assessment is not based on sporting ability. Instead, your achievements are measured through a variety of internally-assessed assignments that focus on your understanding and application of the course content. These assignments provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate your learning through diverse mediums, such as presentations, portfolios, essays, or even media productions, allowing you to showcase your knowledge in a way that best suits your skills and learning style.
The BTEC International Sport course is recognized internationally by governments, industry, and higher education. It provides a comprehensive curriculum that prepares students for direct entry into the global sports industry or Higher Education. BTECs are designed to enable a learner-centred approach to education with a flexible, unit-based structure and knowledge applied to project-based assessments. The course focuses on developing practical, interpersonal, and thinking skills that are essential for success in both employment and higher education.
The course opens up a wide range of progression routes. Over 100,000 BTEC learners apply to university every year, and their Level 3 BTECs are accepted by UK and international universities for entry into relevant degree programmes. The course also provides a direct pathway to a variety of job roles, giving students the practical skills and knowledge needed to enter the workforce.
