• To engage with a range of texts, in a variety of media and forms, from different periods, styles, and cultures

• To develop skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, presenting and performing

• To develop skills in interpretation, analysis and evaluation

• To develop an understanding of relationships between texts and a variety of perspectives, cultural contexts, and local and global issues and an appreciation of how they contribute to diverse responses and open up multiple meanings 

During the course, students will:

• • demonstrate a personal appreciation of language, literature and performance and understanding of the techniques involved in literary criticism, linguistic analysis and the application of performance skills

  • develop powers of expression, both in oral, written and performance communication

  • have the opportunity for practising and developing the skills involved in writing and speaking in a variety of styles and situations

  • explore to a range of literary and non-literary works and writings from different periods, genres, styles and contexts

  • broaden their perspectives through the study of works from other cultures and languages

  • develop detailed analysis of written and performance texts

The programme combines the study of language and culture as well as language and media. This means students will read a wide anthology of non-literary texts including (but not limited to) speeches, advertising campaigns, memoirs, cartoons, opinion columns and editorials.

Students at Higher Level will study 6 literary works over the course.

Students at Standard Level will study 4 literary works over the course.

The study of English enables students to develop effective communication skills and successful critical thinking.  During the course, students will apply analytical approaches and critical theories in a variety of contexts and convey their thinking in oral and written forms.

Students often go on to study related degrees such as English Literature, Linguistics, Creative Writing, Law, Journalism and Advertising. West Island School Alumni who studied English have enjoyed successful careers in the fields of law, journalism, education and marketing.
