• To encourage a personal appreciation of language, literature and performance and develop an understanding of the techniques involved in literary criticism, linguistic analysis and the application of performance skills.

• To develop powers of expression, both in oral, written and performance communication, and provide the opportunity for practising and developing the skills involved in writing and speaking in a variety of styles and situations.

• To broaden perspectives through the study of works from other cultures and languages.

• To develop detailed analysis of written and performance texts.

The programme combines the more traditional aspects of a literature course with a progressive emphasis on cultural awareness and personal integrity, explored through:

• • The close critical examination of written texts, both fiction and non-fiction

  • An awareness of how subtle variations in language use can affect meaning and tone

  • The development of a personal critical voice, appreciation for different readings and interpretations and the assertion of personal judgement

Over the two-year course, students will study a range of literary genres, including prose, plays, drama for a range of time periods and places.

At Higher Level, students will cover 10 literary texts over the course.

At Standard Level, students will study 7 literary texts over the course

The study of English enables students to develop effective communication skills and successful critical thinking.  During the course, students will apply analytical approaches and critical theories in a variety of contexts and convey their thinking in oral and written forms.

Students often go on to study related degrees such as English Literature, Linguistics, Creative Writing, Law, Journalism and Advertising. West Island School Alumni who studied English have enjoyed successful careers in the fields of law, journalism, education and marketing.
