West Island School offers the IB Diploma Programme because its balance of breadth and depth keeps future pathways open while providing a rigorous, holistic education. Through six subject groups, the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), the curriculum pushes students to think critically, learn independently, and develop as active members of society. Rather than teaching students what to think, the IB teaches them how to think.

• Entry Requirements: At least five GCSE/IGCSE grades at A*–C (or 9–4 equivalent)  including English and Mathematics (in a single sitting). Non-GCSE applicants or non-native English speakers may need an entry assessment or a discussion with the Vice Principal.

• Academic Fit: Highly motivated, independent learners thrive here. While academically demanding, the diploma is accessible to a broad range of students when subjects are chosen wisely with guidance from the Post-16 team.

• Structure: A two-year linear programme with coursework throughout and terminal examinations in May of Year 2.

• Global & Holistic Perspective: Prepares students for an interconnected world through intercultural understanding, optional bilingual diplomas, and formal recognition of extracurricular achievements through CAS.

IB Diploma students must complete:

• Six subjects, including three at standard level and three at higher level* (1 each from Groups 1-6, please see WIS Arts Policy)

• CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service)
