The Business Management course will prepare you for a career in the corporate world. It is a modern, dynamic and fascinating course which helps you develop your critical understanding of organisations and the markets they serve. The subject allows you to closely examine the inner workings of a firm and the day-to-day decision-making that occurs in a fast-changing business environment.
You will study business behaviour from the perspective of different stakeholders including managers, shareholders, employees and customers. You will also explore the economic, environmental, ethical, legal, social and technological influences on business activity, while applying a range of business tools and models to different business scenarios. Some of the key topics you will cover include: business ownership, marketing, human resources, finance and operations management. This will be achieved through a variety of teaching methods, including business simulations, investigating case studies and debate. The course is delivered using a triangulated approach; the main content is taught against the backdrop of real-life case studies whilst also being underpinned by six key business concepts: change, culture, ethics, globalisation, innovation and strategy.
Although no prior knowledge is assumed, if you have completed a GCSE Business Studies or Economics course we recommend that you have attained a C grade or above. Achieving a similar grade in GCSE Mathematics will also help you with the quantitative aspects of the course. The top business schools in particular will require at least Standard Level Maths for entry onto a business-related course. You are therefore heavily encouraged to research the entry requirements of desired courses ahead of making your subject selection for both business and mathematics if you consider applying for business courses in the future to be a possibility. The IB Business Management course is a broad foundation for any business-related university degree course. A very high percentage of WIS students apply for business-related degrees worldwide.
By the end of the course, candidates should:
Have a holistic view of the world of business
Think critically and strategically about individual and organisational behaviour
Be able to promote the importance of exploring business issues from different cultural perspectives.
Appreciate the nature and significance of change in a local, regional and global context.
Have a good awareness of the importance of environmental, social and ethical factors in the actions of individuals and organisations.
Have developed an understanding of the importance of innovation in a business environment.
This course is for:
Those with an interest in current affairs and a fascination with the world of business
Those who aspire to run their own business in the future
Those who wish to develop their critical thinking, debating and essay writing skills
Those who would like to apply their mathematical skills to real-life situations
A central feature in the new course, the Business Management Toolkit is a set of tools that provide synthesis and connectivity to the course units in both Standard and Higher Levels of study. These tools are to be integrated throughout the teaching and learning of the course, and applied in different disciplinary and interdisciplinary contexts.

Studying business allows students to develop a broad and balanced set of employability skills such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving and critical thinking. The quantitative elements of the course allow students to apply their numeracy skills to practical situations whilst also improving their literacy and essay writing skills through essay writing and coursework.
Students often go on to study related degrees such as Business Management, International Business, Finance, Accounting or Marketing. Many WIS Business Alumni have then gone on to secure successful careers in industries such as banking, finance, accounting, management consultancy and law.
