Welcome to the West Island School Post-16 curriculum guide.

West Island School's strong global reputation opens doors to top universities worldwide, with our IB results consistently ranking in the top 10%–11% globally. Higher education institutions and apprenticeship courses value our graduates for their critical thinking, well-rounded character, and leadership. We nurture and challenge every student to build on this legacy of excellence by finding their purpose and realising their potential.

To suit different learning styles and goals, we offer diverse Post-16 pathways:

IB Diploma Programme: Ideal for students seeking broad academic challenge and a holistic, exam-based curriculum.

IB Career-related Programme (IBCP) & BTECs: Designed for students who want to specialise early in fields like Creative Media, Digital Design, Sports, Business, or Engineering. BTEC qualifications are equivalent to A-Levels, continuously assessed without final exams, and yield equally outstanding results—with most students achieving top grades (equivalent to A/A*) and securing places at prestigious universities. Students on these pathways will also study 2 or 3 IB subjects alongside their chosen BTECs.

In the coming pages, you will see that there are different routes to enter university worldwide and the choice of pathways depends on each learner’s strengths, how they can maximise their assessment and what their future aims are. By offering a range of BTEC qualifications, we are accredited by the International Baccalaureate Organisation to offer an exciting new programme called the IB Careers Related Diploma. This means young people can choose to specialise earlier in their chosen vocation if they know specifically what they wish to do (e.g., Arts, Sports, Business or Engineering careers) or have a pathway that is still varied but is less examination-based. BTEC qualifications are equivalent to A levels and do not require end of year examinations. Instead, they are assessed continually throughout the programme. The results of students who take these qualifications are equally outstanding. The vast majority achieve the equivalent of A and A* grades. They enable students to attend equally prestigious universities.

Like life, what matters most is that you choose a course you are passionate about, that engages your interest and that matches your preferred style of assessment so that you achieve to the highest that you are capable.
