Biology is the study of the living world and this course aims to develop knowledge and foster appreciation of the significance and implications of the current science of Biology. This course provides an in-depth analysis from the micro to macro examining the workings of cell biochemistry and genetics through to the interactions of organisms and their impacts on the environment.

This course also provides context to develop students’ understanding of the scientific method, considering how theory is generated from experimental work and developing their own research-based investigations linked to personal interests in the subject of Biology.

Biology allows students to debate ethically charged questions, query theories and look at confounding evidence. It challenges students to think independently and analytically to comprehend the world around them.

Study Biology if you are interested in how living organisms function and interact, from bacteria to the human body, this course is for you. Study Biology if this qualification is necessary for your Higher Education pathway. Biology complements and supports other IB disciplines such as Chemistry, Physics, Geography and Mathematics. 

To study Higher Level Biology, it is strongly recommended that at least a grade 6 (or B grade) is achieved at GCSE  and a grade 5 in Maths.

To study Standard Level Biology, it is strongly recommended that at least a grade 5 (C grade) is achieved at GCSE and a grade 5 in Maths.

Students who have taken a single, combined science GCSE should consider an alternative Group 4 subject in order to maximise success.
